Jeep Duck Tags: Printed Cards, Rubber Tags and Stickers Compared

A duck on its own is a small gift. A duck with a tag is a message, and the tag is doing more work than it looks. It carries the group name, the invitation to pass the duck on, and often a space for the finder to add something.

Three formats dominate: printed cards, rubber tags and stickers. Each behaves differently in rain, heat and a door pocket, and each costs differently. The right choice depends on whether the tag needs to survive the weather or simply to make an impression when it is found.

Printed Cards

Cards are the default. They are cheap, they print in full colour on both sides, and they give room for a written note. A card can carry a group name, a social handle, a short explanation of ducking and a space for the finder to write where the duck was found.

Their weakness is weather. Paper absorbs moisture, and a card left on a dashboard in sun will fade, while one that gets wet will cockle or run. Laminating or printing on a synthetic stock solves this at a cost, and the upgrade is usually worth it for ducks that will live outside a vehicle.

Attachment matters more than buyers expect. A card fastened with a rubber band tends to slip off in a glovebox; a card punched and tied with a cord stays with the duck. The etiquette that makes ducking work as a community activity depends partly on the message arriving intact, which the notes on ducking etiquette and tags cover in more detail.

Rubber and PVC Tags

Rubber tags replace paper with a soft plastic shape, often produced in the same tooling family as the duck itself. They are effectively weatherproof, they can carry moulded detail or printed branding, and they feel substantial in the hand.

The trade-off is cost and writing space. A rubber tag costs more per unit than a card and offers little room for handwriting, so it works best where the message is fixed: a brand name, a group identifier, or a short phrase. Where the campaign wants the finder to add something, a rubber tag alone is not enough.

Rubber also handles temperature well, which matters in markets with hot summers and cold winters. A tag that survives a summer dashboard and a winter door pocket without changing shape is a better representation of the brand than one that has visibly aged.

Stickers and Labels

A sticker or label applied directly to the duck removes the attachment problem entirely. There is no card to lose, nothing to tie, and the branding travels with the duck wherever it goes.

The constraint is durability on a curved, flexible surface. A label must conform to the duck without lifting at the edges, and it must resist water, because ducks live in door pockets and occasionally near puddles. Adhesive choice therefore matters as much as print quality, and a supplier should be asked which adhesive is specified for the intended use.

Stickers also change how the duck photographs. A large applied label can dominate a small duck, whereas a small mark reads as an intentional detail. Where the duck is the product and the tag is the message, keeping applied elements small usually looks better.

Cost, Quantity and What Gets Kept

Cards are cheapest per unit and cheapest to change between campaigns, because a reprint is a new print run rather than a new tool. Rubber tags cost more and have a longer lead time, but they last and they can be reused across campaigns if the message is generic. Stickers sit between the two on cost and are the least durable of the three on a flexible surface.

What gets kept is worth thinking about, because a tag that survives is a small piece of long-term branding. Recipients tend to keep ducks on dashboards for months. A card fades and is discarded; a rubber tag or a durable label remains, quietly carrying the group name.

A practical combination is a printed card for the personal message with a small durable mark on the duck itself for the brand. That covers both jobs at modest cost, and it means the message can change between campaigns without changing the duck.

Specifying Tags Alongside the Duck Order

Tags are usually specified after the duck, which delays the order and sometimes produces a mismatch in colour or tone. Specifying both together avoids that, and it lets the factory attach the tag before packing rather than shipping two separate items for the buyer to assemble.

Where a tag carries brand claims or a promotion with conditions, the wording should be checked before printing. Promotional terms are regulated commercial speech in many markets, and the requirements that govern advertising and promotional claims sit broadly within eCFR Title 16, commercial practices. A short phrase on a tag is still a claim.

Finally, decide the assembly question in advance. Attached or loose. Attached costs a little more and guarantees the message travels with the duck; loose is cheaper and allows the tag to be used for something else. Our jeep duck programme handles both, and cold weather ducking places particular demands on whichever format is chosen.

FAQ

What is the cheapest tag format?

Printed cards, both per unit and for a reprint, because a new campaign means a new print run rather than new tooling.

Do paper cards survive on a dashboard?

Rarely for long. Paper absorbs moisture and fades in sunlight. Laminating or using a synthetic stock extends their life considerably.

Are rubber tags worth the extra cost?

Where the message is fixed and the duck will live outdoors or in a vehicle, yes. They are weatherproof and they last, but they leave little room for handwriting.

Do stickers stay on a rubber duck?

It depends on the adhesive and the conformability of the label. Ask the supplier which adhesive is specified for the surface and the intended exposure.

Should tags be attached before shipping?

If the message must travel with the duck, yes. Attaching at the factory costs slightly more and removes the assembly step at your end.
